Pharmacuetical Coils-Types of Coils
Pharmaceutical coil is available in three types of fiber: cotton, rayon, and polyester. Each provides distinct advantages and applications.
Cotton coil is composed of 100% bleached, absorbent cotton. It is selected for its clean, uniform fibers and is designed to give superior performance in packaging of pharmaceutical products.
Rayon coil is formulated of 100% rayon fibers providing a uniform fiber coil.
Polyester coil is a white, odorless, soft, uniformly carded, low moisture, resilient material.

Polyester fiber
  • Natural fiber
  • Man-made fiber (cellulose)
  • Man-made fiber (petroleum)
  • Variety of fiber lengths
  • Uniform
  • Uniform fiber length and denier
  • Easier with cutting cottoner equipment
  • Easier with tearing cotton equipment (rayon tends to dull knives in cutting operation)
  • Non-fluorescent
  • Absorbent - will absorb 22 times its weight in moisture, and moisture regain is 8.0% under normal conditions
  • Absorbent - will absorb 22 times its weight in moisture, and moisture regain is 9.0% to 11.0% under normal conditions
  • Non-absorbent - will neither introduce into or extract moisture from bottle, and moisture regain is .4% under normal conditions
  • Reoxygenates faster in bottle, resulting in a dryer environment
  • Most commonly used in bottling of tablets and capsules
  • Most commonly used in bottling of soft-gel capsules
